The Only Question That Matters
Can you get eight hours of dark, quiet sleep starting at eight in the morning? Everything else is decoration. A hotel with a marble lobby, a gym and a rooftop bar is worthless if the housekeeping trolley comes past at 1000 and the curtains leave a four-inch strip of daylight across the bed.
This is not fussiness. Sleep in the biological day is shorter and lighter than sleep at night even under good conditions, which is why fatigue management is regulated at all — see the ICAO fatigue management material for the framework operators work inside. Your job on the ground is to remove the variables you can control.
The Checklist Crews Actually Use
Darkness
- Do the curtains overlap in the middle, or do they merely meet? Blackout that leaks at the join is not blackout.
- Is there a light strip under the door from a permanently lit corridor?
- How many small LEDs are in the room — smoke detector, television standby, safe, air conditioning panel, kettle? Bring tape.
- Which way does the room face? East-facing rooms on a morning arrival are the worst of both worlds.
Quiet
- Ask for a room away from the lift shaft, the ice machine, the service lift and the function rooms.
- Airport hotels near a live runway are usually better insulated than city hotels near a busy road. Traffic noise is more disruptive than aircraft noise because it is irregular.
- Find out when housekeeping starts and whether a do-not-disturb card is genuinely respected. A hotel that has hosted crews for years will have a system for this; one that has not, will not.
- Building work is invisible on a booking site and audible from 0700. Ask.
The Shuttle
- How often does it run, and does it run through the night as well as through the day?
- Does it go to the passenger terminal only, or will it take you to the freight side on request? This is the single most valuable piece of information about any cargo-station hotel, and it usually needs advance notice at the desk.
- What is the fallback when the shuttle is not running, and does the hotel hold a card for a reliable taxi firm at 0300?
Crew Facilities
- Is there a crew room — somewhere to sit with a bag when the room is not ready or has already been vacated? A hotel that puts one in has understood the customer.
- Laundry access on a long rotation, and whether it is self-service or a two-day turnaround.
- Gym and pool hours, which on a day-sleep schedule are often exactly wrong.
Food
- What is available at 0200 and at 1400, which are the two times you will actually be hungry?
- Is breakfast included, and can it be taken as a bag if you are leaving before service?
- Is there a fridge and a kettle in the room? On a long rotation this quietly matters more than the restaurant.
What a Good Entry Looked Like
The house style on the original site was short, factual and specific. A representative entry — a US East Coast hotel, filed in late 2012 — read almost entirely as logistics: an hourly shuttle to the airport, a driver who would run out to the freight side if you asked ahead of time, a newly added crew room, a discount on food in the restaurant, breakfast included, and staff who were pleasant about all of it. Five facts and one impression. Nothing about the thread count.
That is the standard worth keeping. If you can only remember one thing about a layover to pass on, make it the shuttle timing.
Things That Age Badly
Contracts get retendered, hotels change hands, and the good manager who fixed the curtains moves on. Treat any specific recommendation — including one from a colleague last month — as a hypothesis to verify at check-in rather than a fact. The categories of problem are permanent; the individual properties are not.
Regional notes on where the rest problems cluster are on the Asia, Middle East, Europe and East Coast pages. For food once you are awake, see Restaurants.
