What They Were
A member forum attached to the same site as the layover directory, open to crewmembers who registered. Boards followed the same shape as the rest of the site: layover talk by region, a safety board, and a general board that was mostly complaints about rosters and photographs of sunrises taken from thirty-five thousand feet.
The registration wall was the whole design. It kept the conversation among people who were actually flying the routes, which is what made a note about a shuttle timing trustworthy, and it kept the tone closer to a crew room than to a public comment section.
Why They Worked
Small forums with a real shared context outperform large ones, and this one had four things going for it that are worth writing down because they generalise.
- A narrow subject. Everybody was there for the same reason and nobody had to explain what a sort window was.
- Real anonymity with real accountability. Members posted under handles, but they were verifiable crewmembers, so frankness was possible without it becoming a free-for-all.
- Hard limits on what could be discussed. Nothing operational, nothing company-specific, nothing that identified an individual or an incident. See the ground rules on Safety Corner.
- Usefulness as the standard. A post that changed what somebody packed was a good post. A post that was merely an opinion was not.
What Happened to Them
The same thing that happened to most independent forums of that era. The last dated content anywhere on this site is from late 2012; the conversation moved to larger public forums, and then to private messaging groups where it largely still lives. The site kept serving its final page for another decade without anyone posting to it.
The restored site does not run accounts, logins or a forum. What is preserved here is the material the forums produced — the layover categories, the regional pages and the safety section — written up as standing guidance rather than as threads.
Where the Conversation Is Now
The public freight community is still very much alive and easy to find:
- PPRuNe's Freight Dogs forum — the largest and longest-running public board for this corner of the industry, going for over twenty years.
- Airline Pilot Central Forums — strong on US regional, supplemental and Part 135 cargo operations, and on contract questions.
- Professional associations and unions, which is where anything to do with contract terms genuinely belongs.
- Your operator's own safety and crew channels, which is where anything operational belongs — always.
The Convention Worth Keeping
Whatever the venue, the rule that made this place work is portable: write the thing that changes what the next crew does. Not the anecdote, not the opinion, not the complaint. The shuttle runs hourly. Ask for the freight side. The curtains do not close properly in the rooms facing the ramp.
